Disfluencies in the Spontaneous Speech of Various Age Groups: Data from Hungarian
نویسنده
چکیده
A general ageing of the organism, including hormonal, psychological, and cognitive changes, affects the person’s speech production, too. The slowdown of mental operations and of the speech organs may affect the fluency of speech, but relatively few papers are specifically devoted to disfluencies in old people’s speech, and the various authors disagree concerning frequency data. In the present paper, we examine disfluencies of young and old speakers from the point of view of their frequency and temporal features. The results show that in natural spontaneous narratives, when the task did not involve any particular mental effort, disfluencies occurred in roughly equal numbers with both age groups. In a speech situation made mentally more demanding, we attested such phenomena more frequently in our young subjects’ speech. There are differences between the two age groups both with respect to the types and temporal features of disfluencies.

Age-dependent types and frequency of disfluencies
The age-dependent changes of one’s speech production from childhood up to old age are relatively well known. However, there has been less research conducted concerning the possible alterations of the disfluency phenomena in speakers’ spontaneous speech determined by age. Our hypothesis is that permanent changes are going on in the operation of speech production processes from early childhood up...
متن کاملFactors affecting speakers² choice of fillers in Japanese presentations
Disfluencies are intrinsic in spontaneous speech. Although it is known that there is a wide range of frequencies and types of disfluencies among speech, little is known about factors affecting speakers choice of disfluency types. We first conducted a correspondence analysis using ratios of seven types of fillers, and other disfluencies, in 174 presentations and quantified the data. We conducted...
متن کاملSpeech disfluencies in individuals with Tourette syndrome.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to analyze the frequency and type of speech disfluencies in a relatively large group of individuals with Tourette's syndrome (TS) and to compare their results with similar speech data from a control group of unselected individuals. METHOD Self-report data, as well as conversation and reading samples, were obtained from 69 children diagnosed with ...
متن کاملA Corpus of Spontaneous Speech in Lectures: The KIT Lecture Corpus for Spoken Language Processing and Translation
With the increasing number of applications handling spontaneous speech, the needs to process spoken languages become stronger. Speech disfluency is one of the most challenging tasks to deal with in automatic speech processing. As most applications are trained with well-formed, written texts, many issues arise when processing spontaneous speech due to its distinctive characteristics. Therefore, ...
متن کاملDetecting Structural Metadata with Decision Trees and Transformation-Based Learning
The regular occurrence of disfluencies is a distinguishing characteristic of spontaneous speech. Detecting and removing such disfluencies can substantially improve the usefulness of spontaneous speech transcripts. This paper presents a system that detects various types of disfluencies and other structural information with cues obtained from lexical and prosodic information sources. Specifically...
